A dramatic and delicious Halloween cocktail featuring fresh blood orange juice, pomegranate juice, and vodka with a spooky black sugar rim. This easy-to-make drink is perfect for parties and delivers stunning presentation with deep crimson color and herbal rosemary garnish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 oz fresh blood orange juice (about 23 blood oranges)
  • 2 oz pomegranate juice (100% pure, like POM Wonderful)
  • 2 oz vodka (such as Tito’s or Absolut)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 12 drops red food coloring (optional, gel preferred)
  • Black sanding sugar or black salt for rim
  • Blood orange slices for garnish
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare your glasses: Pour a thin layer of black sanding sugar or black salt onto a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip it into the sugar, rotating gently to coat evenly. Set aside to dry.
  2. Juice your blood oranges: Roll each blood orange on the counter with your palm before cutting. Cut in half crosswise and juice. You’ll need about 4 ounces total (2-3 oranges). Strain through a fine-mesh strainer if desired.
  3. Mix the cocktail base: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add fresh blood orange juice, pomegranate juice, vodka, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. If using red food coloring, add one drop at a time until desired color is reached.
  4. Shake vigorously: Secure the lid and shake for 15-20 seconds until the shaker feels cold.
  5. Strain and serve: Double-strain the cocktail into prepared glasses using a fine-mesh strainer to catch ice shards or pulp.
  6. Garnish: Add a thin slice of blood orange to each glass, floating on the surface or hooked on the rim. Slide a fresh rosemary sprig into the drink.
  7. Serve immediately while the color is vibrant and garnish is fresh.

Notes

For parties, juice blood oranges and mix simple syrup up to a day ahead. Store separately in the fridge. The cocktail base (without ice) can be mixed and stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Let juice ingredients come to room temperature before shaking for best flavor. Adjust simple syrup based on sweetness of blood oranges. The rosemary garnish adds an herbal note that enhances citrus flavors.
