This copycat Starbucks peppermint mocha is a quick and easy homemade recipe that tastes just like the coffee shop version. Made with simple ingredients like cocoa powder, milk, and peppermint extract, it’s perfect for holiday gatherings or a cozy night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots espresso
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the chocolate base: In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 tablespoons water. Whisk until you have a smooth, thick paste.
  2. Heat the milk: Pour 2 cups whole milk into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until small bubbles form around the edges, about 3-4 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  3. Combine the chocolate and milk: Add the chocolate paste to the hot milk and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until fully dissolved and smooth.
  4. Add the peppermint: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract. Taste and adjust if desired.
  5. Add the coffee: Pour 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots espresso into mugs. Divide evenly if making multiple servings. Pour the peppermint chocolate milk over the coffee and stir gently.
  6. Top and serve: Add a generous dollop of whipped cream on top. Sprinkle crushed candy canes over the whipped cream. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t boil the milk to avoid a burnt taste. Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Toast cocoa powder for a deeper flavor. Taste as you go to adjust sweetness and peppermint intensity. The chocolate paste can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to a week.
