Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough (Pillsbury recommended)
  • 24 mini smoked sausages or hot dogs (Lit’l Smokies recommended)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Mustard seeds or black sesame seeds (optional, for eyes)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (full-fat recommended)
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard (Grey Poupon recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard (Maille recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (Cholula or Frank’s RedHot)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Pinch of salt and black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, Dijon mustard, whole-grain mustard, honey, hot sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle lengthwise into 3 thin strips (24 strips total).
  4. Wrap one strip of dough around each mini sausage, leaving a small gap at the top for the face. Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water. Brush each mummy with the egg wash.
  6. If using, place two mustard seeds or black sesame seeds on each mummy for eyes.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a serving platter. Serve warm with the spicy mustard dip.

Notes

If dough gets too warm and sticky, refrigerate the baking sheet for 5 minutes. For a vegetarian version, use mini vegetarian cocktail sausages or parboiled carrot sticks. To make ahead, assemble mummies, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to a few hours. Brush with egg wash just before baking.
