classic puerto rican coquito - featured image

This creamy, spiced coconut drink is a holiday tradition in Puerto Rico. Made with coconut cream, evaporated milk, and warm spices, it’s a festive and delicious alternative to eggnog.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) cream of coconut, like Coco López
  • 1 can (13.5 oz) full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4–5 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup white rum (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon, for garnish
  • Cinnamon sticks, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the evaporated milk, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves. Stir gently and warm for 5-7 minutes. Do not let it boil.
  2. Remove from heat. Using a fine-mesh strainer, pour the warm milk into a large bowl or blender. Discard the cinnamon sticks and cloves.
  3. To the blender with the infused milk, add the cream of coconut, full-fat coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and ground nutmeg. If using rum, add it now.
  4. Blend on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to medium-high and blend for another 30-60 seconds until completely smooth and well combined.
  5. Pour the coquito into glass bottles or jars. Seal tightly and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  6. When ready to serve, give the bottle a gentle shake. Pour into small glasses and garnish with a light dusting of ground cinnamon and a fresh cinnamon stick.

Notes

For best flavor, make a day or two ahead. The flavors deepen overnight. If making for kids or non-drinkers, omit the rum. Do not let the milk boil when infusing spices. Shake well before serving as coconut cream may separate.
