These cozy apple dumplings are a quick and easy dessert made with simple ingredients like apples, crescent roll dough, and a homemade cinnamon sugar sauce. Perfect for family meals, potlucks, or when you need a last-minute treat that tastes like you planned it all along.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled and cored)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Peel and core the apples. If using whole apples, keep them intact; if using wedges, cut each apple into 8 wedges after coring.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Roll each apple (or apple wedge) in the mixture until completely coated. Set aside.
  4. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate along perforations. If using sheet-style dough, cut into 4 equal rectangles. Gently stretch each piece to make it wider.
  5. Place one coated apple (or a few wedges) in the center of each dough piece. Bring the corners up and over the apple, pinching seams to seal. Place seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Melt 1/2 cup butter and brush generously over the tops of each dumpling. Sprinkle any remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered tops.
  7. In a medium saucepan, combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1 cup water. Whisk over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer until sugar dissolves (about 3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  8. Slowly pour the hot sauce around and over the dumplings in the baking dish, distributing evenly. The sauce should come about halfway up the sides of the dumplings.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes. At the 20-minute mark, spoon some sauce from the bottom over the tops. Dumplings are done when dough is golden brown and sauce is bubbly and thickened.
  10. Let the dumplings rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. The sauce will set up slightly and the filling will be very hot.

Notes

Don’t skip greasing the dish—the sauce becomes sticky. For best results, use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. If the tops brown too fast, tent with foil. Leftover dumplings keep in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven at 300°F for 10 minutes. Unbaked dumplings can be frozen without sauce.
