A gothic, candlelit cousin to the classic charcuterie board, this spooky spread features black cheese, dark fruits, and fun Halloween skewers. It’s a sophisticated, savory, and deeply satisfying way to celebrate the season without resorting to candy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz Black Wax Cheddar
  • 4 oz Black Goat Cheese Log
  • 4 oz Smoked Gouda
  • 4 oz Prosciutto, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz Genoa Salami
  • 4 oz Black Pepper Cracked Salami
  • 1 cup Blackberries
  • 1 cup Dried Figs, halved
  • 1/2 cup Kalamata Olives, pitted
  • 1/4 cup Black Sesame Seeds
  • Fresh Rosemary Sprigs
  • 1 box Black Sesame Rice Crackers
  • 1 bag Dark Rye Crispbread
  • 1/2 cup Marcona Almonds
  • 810 Wooden Skewers (about 6 inches)
  • Small cubes of Black Wax Cheddar (for skewers)
  • Small cubes of Smoked Gouda (for skewers)
  • Genoa Salami, folded into quarters (for skewers)
  • Blackberries (for skewers)
  • Dried Figs, halved (for skewers)

Instructions

  1. Prep the ‘Black’ Cheeses (10 minutes): If using plain goat cheese, pour about 2 tablespoons of black sesame seeds onto a small plate. Roll the goat cheese log in the seeds until completely coated. Set aside. For the black wax cheddar, simply unwrap it. The rind is edible and adds to the look.
  2. Make the Halloween Skewers (15 minutes): On a clean cutting board, assemble skewers. A good pattern is: a folded piece of salami, a cube of black cheddar, a blackberry, a cube of smoked gouda, and a half fig. Repeat until you have 8-10 skewers. Make them look a little chaotic.
  3. Set the Stage (5 minutes): Place your large board on your counter. If using a wooden board, lay down a sheet of parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  4. Place the Bowls & Big Items (5 minutes): Put small ramekins of olives and almonds in the corners of the board. Place the three cheeses—black cheddar, smoked gouda, and black goat cheese log—in a triangle formation.
  5. Add the Meats (5 minutes): Fold prosciutto slices into loose ribbons and place them near one of the cheeses. Fold salami slices into quarters and pile them in another spot.
  6. Scatter the Crackers & Fruit (10 minutes): Place black sesame crackers and dark rye crispbread in small clusters around the cheeses. Scatter blackberries and halved dried figs in the empty spaces.
  7. Insert the Skewers (5 minutes): Artfully arrange Halloween skewers, sticking them into the board at different angles. Place some near the cheese, some near the fruit.
  8. Final Garnish (2 minutes): Sprinkle a few extra black sesame seeds over the board. Tuck fresh rosemary sprigs here and there for a pop of green.

Notes

Take cheeses out of fridge 30 minutes before assembling for best flavor. Don’t overcrowd the board; leave space between clusters. For skewer stability, use a firm base like a cheese cube on the bottom. If black wax cheddar is unavailable, brush white cheddar rind with black food coloring mixed with water.
