This creamy, frothy shaken espresso combines rich brown sugar syrup with bold espresso and velvety oat milk for a cozy, coffee-shop-worthy drink you can make at home in under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots of hot espresso (about 2 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup oat milk, cold
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso. Start by brewing 2 shots of hot espresso (about 2 ounces total). If you are using a moka pot, fill the bottom chamber with water up to the valve, add finely ground coffee to the filter basket without tamping it down, and screw the top on. Place it on medium heat and listen for that satisfying gurgle. This takes about 4-5 minutes.
  2. Dissolve the brown sugar. While your espresso is still piping hot, pour it into your mason jar or shaker. Add the 2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar immediately. Stir vigorously with a spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved. This is a crucial step—if the espresso cools down too much, the sugar won’t dissolve fully, and you’ll end up with grainy bits at the bottom of your drink.
  3. Add the ice and shake. Drop 1 cup of ice cubes into the jar with the sweetened espresso. Screw the lid on tightly. Now, shake it like you mean it! Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. You want to hear the ice clattering around and feel the jar getting cold in your hands. This aerates the espresso and creates that beautiful, frothy texture. The jar will get very cold, so you might want to wrap a kitchen towel around it.
  4. Pour into a glass. Fill your serving glass with fresh ice cubes. Pour the shaken espresso mixture over the ice. You will see a lovely layer of foam on top.
  5. Add the oat milk. Slowly pour the cold oat milk over the back of a spoon into the glass. This helps it layer gently on top of the espresso without mixing in completely, creating that gorgeous gradient effect. Pour until the glass is almost full.
  6. Stir and enjoy. Give it a gentle stir with a straw or a long spoon to combine the layers, or leave it as is for a pretty presentation. Take a moment to enjoy the aroma before that first sip.

Notes

Dissolve the brown sugar while the espresso is still hot to avoid graininess. Use large ice cubes to prevent dilution. Chill the oat milk for better layering. For a spiced version, add a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg with the brown sugar.
