This rich and creamy crockpot hot chocolate is made with simple ingredients and topped with a fluffy peppermint whipped cream. Perfect for holiday gatherings or cozy nights in, it’s a comforting drink that brings back warm memories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup heavy cream, cold (for whipped cream)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for whipped cream)
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract (for whipped cream)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in the crockpot. Add the unsweetened cocoa powder and salt to your slow cooker. Whisk them together to break up any lumps.
  2. Add the milk and cream. Pour in the whole milk and heavy cream. Whisk everything together until the cocoa powder is mostly incorporated.
  3. Add the sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips. Pour in the entire can of sweetened condensed milk and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Give it another good stir.
  4. Cook on low for 2 hours. Cover the crockpot and set it to low. Let it cook for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes if you can.
  5. Add the vanilla extract. After 2 hours, stir in the vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness or chocolate flavor as desired.
  6. Make the peppermint whipped cream. While the hot chocolate is finishing, pour the cold heavy cream into a chilled mixing bowl. Add the powdered sugar and peppermint extract. Beat with a hand mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Prepare the toppings. Place the crushed candy canes in a small bowl.
  8. Serve and enjoy. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with a generous dollop of peppermint whipped cream. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use low heat and stir every 30 minutes to prevent scorching. Chill the mixing bowl and beaters before making whipped cream for better volume. If you prefer a less sweet hot chocolate, use semi-sweet chocolate chips and reduce sweetened condensed milk. For a dairy-free version, use oat milk and coconut cream.
