A creamy, sweet, and spicy cheese ball with toasted pecans, dried cranberries, and fresh jalapenos. Perfect for holiday gatherings, this easy appetizer comes together in under 20 minutes and can be made ahead.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened (two 8-ounce blocks)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (about 8 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries, roughly chopped
  • 2–3 fresh jalapenos, finely diced (seeds and membranes removed for less heat)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced (white and light green parts)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup pecans, toasted and finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Toast the pecans: Place chopped pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir constantly for 3-5 minutes until fragrant and slightly darker. Transfer to a plate to cool completely.
  2. Soften the cream cheese: Remove cream cheese from fridge at least 30 minutes before starting. It should be room temperature.
  3. Mix the cheese base: In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add shredded cheddar, dried cranberries, diced jalapenos, green onions, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix on low until just combined.
  4. Taste and adjust: Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning if needed. Add more salt, cayenne, or jalapenos for more heat.
  5. Shape the cheese ball: Place a large piece of plastic wrap on the counter. Scoop the cheese mixture onto the center. Use the plastic wrap to shape into a ball. Twist the top to seal, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 3 days.
  6. Coat the cheese ball: Combine cooled toasted pecans and chopped parsley on a plate. Unwrap the chilled cheese ball and roll it in the pecan mixture, pressing lightly to coat evenly.
  7. Final chill and serve: Place coated cheese ball back in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Serve on a platter with crackers, baguette slices, apple slices, or celery sticks. Let sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Toasting pecans is non-negotiable for best flavor and crunch. Wear gloves when handling jalapenos. Let cheese ball rest at room temperature before serving for easier spreading. Can be made up to 3 days ahead (add coating on serving day). Do not freeze.
