This bright, slightly spicy cranberry sauce combines tart cranberries, fresh orange zest, and ginger for a quick, easy holiday side dish that’s perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any roast chicken dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse cranberries and pick out any soft or shriveled ones. Zest the orange before juicing it. Peel and finely grate the ginger.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, and salt. Stir briefly.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves and cranberries start to pop (5-7 minutes).
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes, until most berries have popped and sauce coats the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in orange zest and grated ginger.
  6. Let cool in the saucepan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a storage container. Sauce will thicken as it cools.
  7. Once cooled, taste and adjust sweetness or tartness if desired (add more sugar or a squeeze of lemon juice).

Notes

Make ahead: sauce improves after 1-2 days in the fridge. For a less chunky texture, blend with an immersion blender after cooking. To double the recipe, use a larger saucepan and increase cooking time slightly.
