This creamy, savory green bean casserole comes together in under 30 minutes of active prep using frozen green beans and pantry staples. It’s the perfect make-ahead side dish for holidays or weeknight dinners, with a crunchy onion topping that stays crisp.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz frozen green beans, thawed slightly
  • 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 1/2 cups French fried onions, divided
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add the thawed frozen green beans and 1 cup of the French fried onions to the bowl. Stir gently until the green beans are evenly coated with the sauce.
  4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup French fried onions, panko breadcrumbs, and melted butter. Stir with a fork until the breadcrumbs are evenly moistened.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole. Do not press it down.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

To make ahead: Assemble the casserole without the topping, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before adding topping and baking. You may need to add 5-10 extra minutes to the covered baking time. For extra crunch, toast the panko breadcrumbs in a dry skillet before mixing with butter.
