This slow cooker witches’ brew hot chocolate is a rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced drink that’s incredibly easy to make. It’s the ultimate cozy drink for Halloween parties, chilly nights, or any time you need a little extra magic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 whole vanilla bean, split lengthwise
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows (optional)
  • 1–2 drops green food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Vanilla Bean: Using a sharp knife, carefully split the vanilla bean lengthwise down the middle. Leave the ends attached. Use the back of the knife to scrape out the tiny black seeds. You’ll use both the pod and the seeds.
  2. Whisk the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the sifted cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, cayenne pepper (if using), and the pinch of salt.
  3. Combine in the Slow Cooker: Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into your slow cooker. Add the sweetened condensed milk and whisk until combined.
  4. Add the Chocolate and Spices: Sprinkle the cocoa powder mixture over the milk and whisk vigorously until there are no dry pockets. Add the chopped semi-sweet chocolate and the vanilla bean pod (with the seeds scraped in). Give it one more good stir.
  5. Slow Cook on Low: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Do not cook on HIGH. Give it a good stir every 30-45 minutes.
  6. Final Stir and Serve: After 2 hours, remove the lid and give the brew a final, vigorous whisk. Fish out the vanilla bean pod. If using vanilla extract instead of a bean, stir it in now.
  7. Optional: The ‘Bubbling Brew’ Effect: For a fun Halloween touch, stir in 1-2 drops of green food coloring just before serving. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs and top with a handful of mini marshmallows.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mugs. Serve immediately while it’s hot and comforting.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk, canned coconut cream, dairy-free semi-sweet chocolate, and dairy-free sweetened condensed milk. For an adult version, add a splash of peppermint schnapps, bourbon, dark rum, or Kahlúa to each mug. If your hot chocolate tastes thin after 2 hours, let it cook for another 30 minutes on LOW, uncovered, to concentrate the flavor.
