This isn’t just another red punch recipe. This is the centerpiece of your Halloween party, the conversation starter, and the thing your guests will be talking about long after the last piece of candy is gone. It’s a sensory experience disguised as a drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (1.4 L) pineapple juice
  • 4 cups (950 ml) cranberry juice cocktail
  • 2 cups (475 ml) orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 cup (240 ml) lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7-Up)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) simple syrup (optional)
  • 1 to 2 blocks of food-grade dry ice
  • Hot water (not boiling)
  • Frozen gummy worms or spiders (optional, for garnish)
  • Ice ring or large ice block (optional)
  • Fresh mint or rosemary sprigs (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the Punch Base (Up to 24 Hours Ahead): In a large pitcher, combine the pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and orange juice. Stir well to combine. If you’re using the simple syrup, add it now. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.
  2. Prepare Your Ice Ring (Optional, Day Before): The day before, fill a ring mold or small bundt pan halfway with water. Add your gummy worms or plastic spiders. Freeze until solid, then add more water to fill the mold completely. Freeze overnight.
  3. Set the Stage: Just before your party starts, set up your punch bowl on a sturdy table.
  4. Assemble the Punch (15 Minutes Before Serving): Pour the chilled punch base into the punch bowl. Gently add the lemon-lime soda. Place your ice ring or a large block of ice into the punch. Give it a gentle stir.
  5. Prepare the Dry Ice (Immediately Before Serving): Put on your thick gloves or oven mitts. Using the tongs, carefully place a small piece of dry ice (about the size of a golf ball) into your small heatproof bowl or ramekin. Important: Do not put dry ice directly into the punch bowl because guests might accidentally scoop it up. Place the small bowl with the dry ice into the center of the punch bowl, making sure it’s stable and the rim is above the liquid level.
  6. Activate the Fog: Slowly pour very hot tap water (not boiling) into the small bowl with the dry ice. The hotter the water, the more dramatic the fog.
  7. Maintain the Fog: The fog effect from a single piece of dry ice lasts about 5-10 minutes. As the fog starts to subside, use your tongs to add another small piece of dry ice to the small bowl and add more hot water.
  8. A Serving Warning: Place a small, clear sign next to the punch bowl that says, ‘Punch contains dry ice. Do not consume the ice or touch the bottom of the bowl.’

Notes

Always use food-grade dry ice. Never touch dry ice with bare hands. Do not put dry ice directly into the punch; use a separate small bowl. The fog effect lasts 5-10 minutes per piece; replenish as needed. Store dry ice in a well-ventilated cooler, not in the refrigerator or freezer. For an adult version, swap lemon-lime soda for 1 cup (240 ml) of vodka or white rum.
