These Halloween dirt cups are the kind of dessert that makes you look like a hero without actually doing much work. They’re crazy easy, budget-friendly, and perfect for parties—individual servings that disappear faster than anything else on the table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (3.9 oz) boxes instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold whole milk
  • 1 (14.3 oz) package Oreo cookies
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
  • 1 (4.5 oz) bag gummy worms
  • 810 gummy spiders or other Halloween candy (optional)
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • ½ cup shredded coconut, unsweetened (optional)
  • Piping gel or corn syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the pudding: In a large mixing bowl, combine the two boxes of instant chocolate pudding mix with the 4 cups of cold milk. Whisk or beat with an electric mixer for about 2 minutes until the mixture thickens. It should look glossy and start to hold soft peaks when you lift the whisk. Let it sit for 5 minutes to fully set while you prepare the other components.
  2. Crush the Oreos: Place all the Oreo cookies (cream filling and all) into your food processor. Pulse about 15-20 times until you get fine crumbs that look like potting soil. If you’re using the bag method, put the cookies in a zip-top bag, seal it, and go at it with a rolling pin until you get the same texture. The crumbs should be uniform—no big chunks. If you’re using the melted butter trick, transfer the crumbs to a bowl and stir in the melted butter with a fork until it’s evenly distributed.
  3. Prepare the ‘grass’ garnish (optional): Put the shredded coconut in a small bowl and add 2-3 drops of green food coloring. Stir with a fork until the color is evenly distributed. It’ll look pale at first, but it gets brighter as it sits. Set this aside.
  4. Layer the cups: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of crushed Oreos into the bottom of each clear cup. Press down lightly with the back of a spoon to create an even base layer. This gives the illusion of compacted dirt.
  5. Add the pudding: Spoon or pipe the chocolate pudding over the Oreo layer, filling each cup about two-thirds full. You want enough room for the top dirt layer and the decorations. Tap each cup gently on the counter to settle the pudding and remove any air bubbles.
  6. Top with ‘dirt’: Sprinkle a generous layer of crushed Oreos over the pudding, covering it completely. You want about 2-3 tablespoons per cup. The top should look like freshly turned soil, with no pudding peeking through.
  7. Add the worms: Take 2-3 gummy worms per cup and gently push them into the ‘dirt’ so they look like they’re crawling out. Angle them at different directions—some halfway in, some just poking their heads out, one maybe draped over the edge of the cup. This is where you get to be creative. I like to save one worm per cup to place on top of the dirt, like it’s just surfaced.
  8. Add the grass (if using): If you made the green coconut, brush a little piping gel or corn syrup around the inside rim of each cup, then sprinkle the green coconut so it sticks. This creates a ring of ‘grass’ around the top edge. It’s an extra step that makes these look professionally done.
  9. Chill: Refrigerate the cups for at least 2 hours before serving. This allows the pudding to fully set and the flavors to meld. If you’re making these for a party, overnight is even better. The cookies soften slightly, which actually improves the texture.
  10. Serve cold: These are best straight from the fridge. The contrast between the cold, creamy pudding and the crunchy cookie crumbs is what makes them so satisfying.

Notes

Don’t use sugar-free pudding mix—the texture comes out thin and never sets properly. For dairy-free, use oat milk. To prevent gummy worm color bleeding, don’t insert worms until right before serving. The butter trick (adding melted butter to crushed Oreos) gives a more realistic dirt texture. These can be assembled a day in advance; flavors improve overnight.
